PATTERSON - A ruptured 12 inch gas line destroyed a section of Marshall Road early Sunday morning.

The incident happened shortly after 5:00am just east of Ward Avenue. The rupture created a significant crater in the roadway causing closures at both ends. According to officials at the scene, the rupture was detected by sensors along the pipeline indicating a change in pressure.

The escaping gas created a jet engine like sound but posed no threat to the area. The leak was stopped late in the morning and crews arrived to begin assessment of damage. By the afternoon, no cause had been determined.

Utility officials say the line is used for transmission of gas from one location to another before reaching a distribution point.
