PATTERSON - A ruptured 12 inch gas line destroyed a section of Marshall Road early Sunday morning.

The incident happened shortly after 5:00am just east of Ward Avenue. The rupture created a significant crater in the roadway causing closures at both ends. According to officials at the scene, the rupture was detected by sensors along the pipeline indicating a change in pressure.

The escaping gas created a jet engine like sound but posed no threat to the area. The leak was stopped late in the morning and crews arrived to begin assessment of damage. By the afternoon, no cause had been determined.

Utility officials say the line is used for transmission of gas from one location to another before reaching a distribution point.

Update: Cal Trans Works to Repair I-5 Sinkhole

Written by

San Joaquin County - Road repair crews worked diligently Wednesday to repair a sinkhole discovere on Interstate 5 early Tuesday morning.

The sinkhole was discovered by a maintenance crew working in the area. The sinkhole was about a foot in diameter and 10-15 feet deep according to Greg Lawson, a Cal Trans spokesperson.

The section of highway was excavated, as crews suspected an abandoned utility line could have been the cause for the sinkhole.

Traffic was diverted onto Highway 132, north onto State Route 33, then back onto Interstate 5 around the work area. Lawson said that delays were estimated to be about 10 minutes.

Crews hope to have the repair work finished by Friday.
