Pedestrian Struck, Killed by Train in Merced

MERCED - A pedestrian was struck and killed after crossing paths with a train Friday morning.

The crash happened at about 7:40am on the Santa Fe Railroad tracks east of Highway 59. Police say they received a call from BNSF reporting the pedestrian being struck by a freight train. Emergency personnel responded to the scene to provide aid to the pedestrian. The injuries sustained were too major, and the pedestrian died at the scene.

Police indicate the pedestrian, identified only as a caucasian man in his mid 20's, was walking near the south end of a Wal Mart when he cross the path of the train. His identity was not released by authorities, pending notification of family members.

Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle in Ceres

CERES - Emergency crews responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle late Friday morning.

The crash was dispatched at about 11:49, indicating the collision happened near the intersection of East Hatch Road at Richland Avenue.

At time of publication, extent of injuries was not available.

Fatal Collision Investigated in Stockton

STOCKTON - Authorities closed a roadway down to investigate a collision that claimed the life of a pedestrian Tuesday afternoon.

The collision was dispatched to the California Highway Patrol at about 5:45pm on West Benjamin Holt Drive between Pacific Avenue and Gettysburg Place. Early indications suggest a pedestrian was struck by a white Dodge pickup truck.

By 7:30pm, the coroner had arrived to take custody of the deceased pedestrian. The eastbound lanes of Benjamin Holt Drive were blocked. No further details were available at time of publication.

MODESTO - A man who was killed in a hit and run traffic collision was identified by relatives, and say his organs are being donated to those in need.

Ronald Ramos, 61, was struck by a vehicle on Paradise Road Saturday morning at about 6:00am. A 39 year old woman driving the involved Honda stopped to check on him before leaving the scene. Authorities later located her during the investigation. Ramos died at the scene.

Relatives say Ramos was disabled and had recently defeated a month long illness. He was on his way to catch a bus to visit his ill mother during the time of the collision. His organs, tissue and skin are being donated to help those in need of transplants according to family members.

Two Fatal Hit and Runs Claim Lives of Pedestrians

MODESTO - Police investigated two separate fatal collisions that claimed the lives of two pedestrians Saturday.

Shortly after midnight emergency personnel responded to a report of a traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian near the intersection of Sylvan and McHenry Avenues. Police were told by witnesses that the pedestrian was struck by a black Saturn driving west on Sylvan when the collision hapened, then struck a light pole.

The driver of the Saturn exited the vehicle, looked at the pedestrian, then entered the vehicle again. The driver backed the vehicle over the pedestrian again before fleeing the scene. Police later found the vehicle crashed into a parked car and abandoned on the 3600 block of Chippewa.

Six hours later police responded to another collision involving a pedestrian on Paradise Road. Early reports indicate that a 61 year old man was struck by a Honda traveling east. The Honda was being driven by a 39 year old woman, who initially stopped to help the pedestrian but later left before authorities arrived.

Police were able to later make contact with the driver. The pedestrian died at the scene. Authorities say the investigations are ongoing and they are seeking additional witnesses.

Police offer the following safety tips for both motorists and pedestrians:

For drivers: 
• Slow down, especially in inclement weather and at night. 
• Watch for pedestrians in and around crosswalks and around vehicles. 
• Put away all distractions. 

For pedestrians: 
• Use crosswalks. 
• Look both ways several times before crossing. 
• Don’t assume a driver sees you. Make eye contact to ensure you’re seen. 
• Obey all traffic laws. 
• Stay alert. Items such as headphones and cell phones should be put away until you arrive safely at your destination.

Yosemite Park Roads to Close Following Storm Warning

YOSEMITE - Roads leading into Yosemite Valley are expected to close Thursday at 5:00pm due to a winter storm and flash flood warning.

The National Weather Service issued the warning through Friday December 15th, with some areas expected to receive as much as six inches of rain.  Officials predict heavy snow in the Sierra Mountains, with as much as six feet at the crest. The Merced River water level is expected to rise over 14 feet, several feet above flood level at the Pohono River Gauge.

Road closures take effect in and out of the park starting at 5:00pm and will last overnight. Officials urge travelers who are leaving the park to exit today by 4:00pm at the latest. 

The following roads are scheduled to be closed:

- Highway 140 at the El Portal park line.

- Wawona Road from Wawona to Yosemite Valley will be closed at Chinquapin.

- Northside Drive exiting Yosemite Valley will be closed at Yosemite Valley Lodge for outgoing traffic.

- Big Oak Flat Road at Highway 120 will be closed at Foresta Junction.

Roads are expected to be re-evaluated for opening on Friday.

Park officials urge travelers to be cautious of other hazards while leaving the park including mud and debris flows, falling rocks and tree collapse. Fire zones may see increased dangers of debris flows during heavy rain.

UPDATE: Patterson Man Killed in Modesto Crash

MODESTO - Police have identified a Patterson man who lost his life in a traffic collision Tuesday night.

Shortly before 8:00pm Tuesday, emergency crews responded to the area of 9th Street and Coldwell Avenue for a report of an overturned vehicle. A man was found unresponsive in the car. First responders attempted life saving measures, but the man died at the scene.

The driver was identified as 59 year old Bill Verhaegen of Patterson. The investigation into the crash continues, but it appears he suffered a medical emergency at the time of the crash.
