Two Fatal Hit and Runs Claim Lives of Pedestrians

Written by

MODESTO - Police investigated two separate fatal collisions that claimed the lives of two pedestrians Saturday.

Shortly after midnight emergency personnel responded to a report of a traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian near the intersection of Sylvan and McHenry Avenues. Police were told by witnesses that the pedestrian was struck by a black Saturn driving west on Sylvan when the collision hapened, then struck a light pole.

The driver of the Saturn exited the vehicle, looked at the pedestrian, then entered the vehicle again. The driver backed the vehicle over the pedestrian again before fleeing the scene. Police later found the vehicle crashed into a parked car and abandoned on the 3600 block of Chippewa.

Six hours later police responded to another collision involving a pedestrian on Paradise Road. Early reports indicate that a 61 year old man was struck by a Honda traveling east. The Honda was being driven by a 39 year old woman, who initially stopped to help the pedestrian but later left before authorities arrived.

Police were able to later make contact with the driver. The pedestrian died at the scene. Authorities say the investigations are ongoing and they are seeking additional witnesses.

Police offer the following safety tips for both motorists and pedestrians:

For drivers:
• Slow down, especially in inclement weather and at night.
• Watch for pedestrians in and around crosswalks and around vehicles.
• Put away all distractions.

For pedestrians:
• Use crosswalks.
• Look both ways several times before crossing.
• Don’t assume a driver sees you. Make eye contact to ensure you’re seen.
• Obey all traffic laws.
• Stay alert. Items such as headphones and cell phones should be put away until you arrive safely at your destination.

Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to contact the Modesto Police Department or Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636 where callers can remain anonymous.
