Person of Interest Sought in Homicide

TUOLUMNE COUNTY - Authorities with the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office are asking for the public's help in locating a person of interest regarding a suspected homicide.

Deputies responded to Black Road in the Big Oak Flat area early Monday where they located a deceased adult male. The area was taped off as a crime scene and investigators responded to process the area.

Officials believe Christopher Reed, who also goes by the name Elton, is a person of interest in this case. Anyone who knows his whereabouts is asked not to confront him but call the sheriff's office at (209) 533-5815

Fatal Crash Reported in Modesto

MODESTO - Authorities report at least one person was killed in a collision involving two vehicles Saturday afternoon.

The crash was reported at about 6:08pm near the intersection of Kiernan Avenue and Pentecost Drive. According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision involved a motorcycle and an SUV.

By 7:44pm, the collision had been classified as fatal. Authorities say the motorcycle crashed head on into the SUV. There were no further details released at time of publication.

Saturday Morning Shooting Leads to Woman's Arrest

STOCKTON - Police arrested a 21 year old woman on attempted homicide charges after a shooting in an apartment Saturday morning.

At about 8:21am officers responded to a report of a person shot near the 300 block of Worth Street.

Arriving officers did not locate the victim, who was reportedly transported by a relative to a hospital. That victim, identified only as an adult male, was listed in serious but condition.

Police were able to locate a shooting scene inside of an apartment. During the investigation, the victim identified 21 year old Beanney Baca as the shooter. She was arrested and booked into jail.

The adult male victim is expected to survive.

Police Investigate Sunday Night Homicide

STOCKTON - Police investigated a homicide after a man was found shot Sunday night.

Shortly after 8:00pm, officers were called to the 1000 block of North Madison Street for a report of a person who was shot. When they arrived, they found a man who was suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

The man died at the scene, and detectives responded to take over the investigation. Police have no motive or suspect information.

MODESTO - Sergeant Michael Pershall was honored in a memorial service by friends, family and peers Wednesday morning.

Pershall was described as someone who touched all of Modesto, but touched the Modesto Police Department family even deeper.

The recently promoted sergeant was killed when he was struck by an impaired driver on Merle Avenue on Tuesday August 22nd. Pershall was riding his bicycle training for an event for peace officers when the crash occurred. He was thrown off his bicycle and killed instantly.

Prior to joining the Modesto Police Department, Pershall was a deputy with the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office. For the memorial service, the neighboring agency showed strong support, sending multiple deputies to attend.

"Mike was a victim of a drunk driver," Police Chief Galen Carroll said Wednesday. "There's no excuse for driving drunk." 

Matthew Gibbs, 32, was arrested and charged with the murder of Sergeant Pershall. He pleaded not guilty in court Tuesday afternoon.

"Mike was the kind of man who made everyone feel like his best friend," Chief Carroll said.

He was 38 years old.

MODESTO - Authorities have identified the member of the Modesto Police family who was killed in an off-duty collision.

Sergeant Michael Pershall, who was recently promoted on August 8th, was riding his bicycle on Merle Avenue when he was struck from behind by a suspected drunk driver shortly after 6:00pm Tuesday. Officers with the California Highway Patrol responded to investigate the crash and arrested 32 year old Matthew Gibbs.

Pershall joined the Modesto Police Department in 2012. Prior to that, he was a deputy with the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office for four years. 

He served as a canine handler, field training officer, police explorer advisor and was also a negotiator for the critical incident team. Sergeant Pershall was described as a positive role model for new and young members of the department who led by example. He was also involved in several community outreach programs such as giving canine presentations during "National Night Out."

"Mike's loss creates a tremendous void within our organization and within the hearts of those he touched," Modesto Police Chief Galen Carroll said in a press release. "We are forever grateful for the moments we shared with him."

The suspected impaired driver is being charged with homicide and several DUI related charges.

MODESTO - Police Chief Galen Carrol reported the loss of an officer in a traffic collision Tuesday evening.

The crash happened near Savage Middle School on Merle Avenue shortly after 6:00pm.

Authorities rushed an American Flag to the scene to cover the officer. The officer's identity was not released at time of publication.

No further details were released, only that the investigation was turned over to the California Highway Patrol.

Police Seek Fraud, Auto Theft Suspect

CERES - Police are seeking the public's help in identifying a woman who they say attempted to cash a fraudulent check and stole a vehicle.

Authorities say the woman entered the Bank of America on Mitchell Road in Ceres on July 25th and attempted to cash a fraudulent check. The suspect attempted to use someone else's identification to cash the check but was unsuccessful.

While she attempted to cash the check, she managed to steal another customer's keys from the counter and stole their vehicle. It was later found abandoned and recovered in Turlock.

A credit card that was in the stolen vehicle was later used at the Turlock Target store and a gas station in Manteca, authorities say.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the suspect's identity to contact Detective Trinidad Viramontes at (209) 538-5730, or Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636 where callers can remain anonymous.

Man Arrested After Waving BB Gun at Store

MODESTO - Police say a man who refused to come out of a convenience store after waving a pistol was armed with a bb gun.

The incident began at about 3:30pm Monday afternoon at the A&M Gas Mini Mart near Maze Boulevard and North Martin Luther King Drive. Police responded to a report of a man sitting outside a nearby market waving a gun. Officers responded and made contact with the man, who was uncooperative.

Officers used a taser, but it was not effective. The suspect ran into the business which was still occupied by customers. The store was evacuated as police surrounded the building and called in their negotiators and SWAT teams.

Area roadways were closed off to traffic as crowds of spectators gathered nearby. Police entered the building at about 5:30pm. The suspect surrendered moments later.

Authorities identified the suspect as 35 year old Shawn Mercer, who had prior warrants for his arrest. He also faces additional charges, including resisting arrest, possession fo ammunition and possession of methamphetamine.
