Fatal Hit and Run Suspect Sentenced

MODESTO - Authorities with the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office announced the sentencing of a Riverbank man in a fatal hit and run case stemming from a collision in February of 2015.

Gabriel Bocanegra, 25, was sentenced to seven years in state prison Friday by Judge Ricardo Cordova. Bocanegra was sentenced for felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and felony hit and run causing death. The collision claimed the life of pedestrian Thomas Larson in Oakdale on February 22nd, 2015.

Just after 5:00pm on that day in February, officials say Bocanegra was driving his mother's car on Highway 108 through downtown Oakdale when he came across other vehicles stopped at an intersection near 3rd avenue. Bocanegra used the left turn only lane to drive around the stopped traffic driving over the speed limit where he struck Mr. Larson in the crosswalk. The impact broke the windshield.

Officials say Bocanegra fled the scene through side streets and had to punch out the windshield to see where he was driving. Citizens who witnessed the collision called 911 to report the collision and the vehicle license plate number Bocanegra was in. Deputies with Riverbank Police Services were able to locate and follow Bocanegra's mother as she left her home in Riverbank. He was arrested just after he was picked up by his mother in West Oakdale, about two miles from the crash scene.

Authorities say Bocanegra has previous speeding conditions on his driving record, as well as running a stop sign, exhibition of speed, and was found to be at fault in a previous collision. A blood test found marijuana in his system, and the investigation determined he was leaving a marijuana dispensary prior to the collision.
