Sheriff K-9 Stabbed During Arrest

MODESTO - A Stanislaus County Sheriff's canine was stabbed while deputies were attempting to apprehend a man early Friday morning.

Just before 3:45am, a clerk at the Quick Stop market at 1501 Paradise Road called authorities to report a suspicious person. The clerk told a dispatcher that he thought the man, who authorities identified as 53 year old Wesley Brackney, was going to rob the business.

Deputies arrived at the business and located Brackney outside the store. Authorities say he immediately became confrontational with deputies and refused to comply with their orders. He was aggressive and verbally threatened deputies according to a press release.

Canine handler Wade Carr decided to deploy his partner Rocky instead of physically engaging Brackney. Authorities say Brackney had several opportunities to surrender before Rocky was deployed.

As Rocky moved in, the suspect armed himself with a knife he was carrying and began to stab the dog. As he attacked the canine, deputies moved in and disarmed him. Backup arrived and Brackney was taken into custody. Rocky suffered four stab wounds to the head, neck and back. A vet was able to treat his wounds with stitches.

Brackney faces several charges including assault on a police canine, and assault on a peace officer. He also had an outstanding warrant for narcotics. Authorities say he has a lengthy criminal history including narcotics offenses. He is on probation and a registered narcotics offender.

After Brackney was arrested, he told deputies it was his intention to provoke them into a confrontation to shoot him, authorities say.

"I'm very proud of the restraint Deputy Carr and Deputy Martinez demonstrated during this armed confrontation," Sheriff Adam Christianson said. "Deputy Carr's canine partner was under attack and being actively stabbed. Deputy Carr certainly had justification to use deadly force in this confrontation to save his partner's life, but chose to physically engage Brackney to stop the assault, placing himself at great risk."

Neither deputy was injured during the confrontation.

Rocky, a 5 year old Belgian Malinois, is a two year veteran with the Sheriff's Office. He is expected to make a full recovery.
