STOCKTON - Authorities arrested a man accused in the deaths of three people following a hit and run collision in Stockton Thursday evening.

The crash happened near the Highway 99 Frontage Road south of Hammer Lane and Moreland Street at about 7:40pm. A witness located an unresponsive bicyclist down in the roadway and called 911. As Highway Patrol officers and other emergency personnel arrived, the bicyclist who was identified as 27 year old John Eric Stevens of Stockton, died from his injuries. The involved vehicle had fled the scene before authorities arrived.

As officers searched the area, they located a 1997 Honda Accord with major front end damage a short distance away. The driver had fled the vehicle, but officers found two passengers deceased inside. Authorities say the vehicle had been reported stolen from Stockton on Wednesday.

Investigators determined that the Honda was traveling south on Frontage Road at a high rate of speed when it struck the bicyclist and continued without stopping. The impact killed both passengers. They were identified as 23 year old Raymond Lawrence Schenone, and 23 year old Michelle Joanne Vargas, both of Stockton.

The Highway Patrol says because of the relationship it has built with the community, they were able to receive information leading to the arrest of 23 year old Matthew Barnec of Stockton, who is suspected of being the driver in this fatal crash.

Barnec was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on felony hit and run charges. Other charges are anticipated pending the investigation.
