MODESTO - Two pedestrians suffered serious injuries Monday afternoon after fleeing from a store after shoplifting.
Shortly after noon, Modesto Police officers responded to a report of two pedestrians struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Standiford and McHenry Avenues. Early indications suggest both pedestrians were down on the ground, injured.
Police closed off both directions of Standiford and Sylvan Avenues before McHenry as officers examined the scene. There were bags and belongings scattered in the westbound lanes. On the sidewalk clothing and shoes as well as blood could be seen.
According to police spokeswoman Heather Graves, the two pedestrians were fleeing a store across the street after shoplifting. The two were attempting to steal alcohol and ran across the street to avoid capture when they were struck.
The pedestrians were only identified as a man and a woman. The man was listed in stable condition. The woman was listed as critical.
Graves said the two could face charges should the store seek prosecution, and further investigation was pending.
CERES - A horse was killed and a rider suffered major injuries after being involved in a collision with a vehicle Sunday night.
The crash was reported to the California Highway Patrol at about 9:58pm near the intersection of Lucas and Mitchell Roads near Ceres. Emergency crews arrived and found the horse and rider down in the roadway.
The rider suffered a major head injury and was transported to an area hospital. The horse died at the scene. The southbound lanes of Lucas Road were blocked.
Early indications suggest the involved driver remained at the scene. Further details were not available at time of publication.
MODESTO - A big rig crash blocked at least two lanes of Highway 99 Sunday night.
The crash was reported to the California Highway Patrol at about 10:32pm on the northbound lanes of Highway 99 near the Tuolumne Boulevard offramp.
Early reports indicated a big rig and at least two other vehicles were involved in the crash. There were reports of debris across the number two and three lanes of the highway.
There were no reports of injuries in the collision. The truck was reportedly hauling 41,000 lbs of produce.
SALIDA - Authorities responded to a traffic collision in Salida Thursday evening that involved a child.
Emergency crews responded to a report of a child struck by a vehicle at about 6:44pm. The collision happened on the 4800 block of Deveraux Way.
First responders arrived and found the child down in the middle of the road. Early indications suggest the child was struck by an SUV. It is unclear if the child was playing near the roadway or crossing the street during the time of the collision.
Arriving personnel described the child’s condition as alert and conscious. Deputies closed off the road to traffic, and the child was taken to a nearby school to be flown by a Cal STAR air ambulance to a regional hospital.
The circumstances leading up to the crash are under investigation.
MARIPOSA COUNTY - Four people were rescued Friday morning after their vehicle rolled 500 feet down a mountainside.
Authorities with the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office say an alert driver was traveling on Highway 49 about a mile south of Schilling Road when they saw tire tracks leading off the roadway. The driver was able to hear people calling for help when she exited her vehicle and called 911.
Search and Rescue crews used a rope system to reach and remove the four passengers of the vehicle. The passengers were transported to an area hospital for evaluation and care.
OAKDALE - One person was killed Friday afternoon in a collision on Highway 108 near Stearns Road.
The crash was reported at about 4:43pm involving a big rig and a pickup truck and a third unidentified vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol. Emergency crews arrived on scene and found the involved vehicles with major damage from the collision.
Both lanes of the highway were blocked by the crash, with eastbound traffic diverting onto Stearns Road. Westbound traffic diverted onto Wamble Road. Early reports indicate a woman who was occupying one of the vehicles lost her life in the collision.

MERCED COUNTY - One person was killed in a traffic collision on Interstate 5 south of Los Banos Monday afternoon.
The crash was reported at about 2:42pm near Highway 165 on Southbound Interstate 5. Early reports indicate a pickup truck overturned, trapping the occupants.
A 70 year old man, a resident of Oregon, died in the collision. A 60 year old woman, also from Oregon, suffered major injuries in the collision and was transported to a Fresno hospital.
The man's identity was not released pending notification of family.
