Clerk Runs For Cover as Gunman Fires on Store

Written by

EMPIRE - A convenience store clerk narrowly escaped serious injury after a gunman opened fire through the door of the business Wednesday night.

At about 9:17pm, deputies with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office responded to a convenience store on the 200 block of South Santa Fe for a report of a shooting.

Arriving deputies found the glass door to the business shattered from gunfire.

According to Deputy Raj Singh, the employee at the business suffered a minor injury to the hand. It was unclear if the injury was from the gun fire or broken glass as they ran for cover.

Authorities are unsure on why the gunman opened fire. The gunman did not appear to enter the business, and only opened fire from outside the building. It was unclear if the suspect’s motive was to rob the business or cause harm to the employee.

An evidence technician responded to the scene to assist with the investigation Wednesday night, photographing the broken glass.

The only suspect description authorities had was an adult Caucasian man.

Deputy Singh praised the business owner for having bright lighting at the business. He recommend business owners that operate into the night hours have the same, as well as good quality surveillance cameras. He also suggested not covering windows with posters to allow passing traffic to see inside.

Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to contact the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636 where callers can remain anonymous.
