Newman Officer Killed During Traffic Stop

NEWMAN - A Newman Police Officer was shot and killed Wednesday morning, and authorities are asking for the public’s help identifying the suspect.

Corporal Ronil Singh conducted a traffic stop near Merced Street and Eucalyptus Avenue shortly before 1:00am, calling out shots fired to dispatch moments later. Corporal Singh’s partner responded and found him down in the road suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to Newman after hearing the call. The suspect, who remained unidentified late Wednesday morning, fled the area prior to their arrival. Surveillance images released by authorities show a man in a liquor store purchasing what appeared to be cases of beer. His vehicle was described as a crew cab Dodge pickup truck, possibly silver in color with “AR” dealership paper plates.

Corporal Singh was a native of Fiji and served with Newman Police since 2011. He is survived by his wife and five month old son. Anyone with information regarding the suspect’s identity or whereabouts in this case is urged to not approach him, but call 911 immediately. He is considered armed and dangerous.

His partner was not the first two respond. As I’m aware that two men from the Newman fire depart were first to arrive to the scene before his partner
