Shooting Investigation in Modesto

MODESTO - Police responded to a report of a person shot Monday morning.
The shooting was reported at about 8:42am near Ashford Court.
Early reports indicate the victim was shot by an occupant of a small red pickup. The shooter was described as an African-American in his 20's with dreads wearing a white tee shirt.
At last update, police had located the vehicle near Sherwood and Granger and were attempting to locate the suspect.

Stolen Vehicle Pursuit Ends with Arrests

MODESTO - A high speed pursuit involving a stolen vehicle ended with two suspects in custody Monday morning.

The pursuit involved a stolen Ford Fusion. A California Highway Patrol Officer requested for assistance in the area of Robertson Road Park as they chased the vehicle through the neighborhood.
Stanislaus County Sheriff Deputies responded as the pursuit sped through Paradise Road toward downtown Modesto. It then entered southbound Highway 99 and reached estimated speeds of 100mph. The pursuit exited Tuolumne and sped through D Street and north on 9th before turning the wrong way on G Street.
Authorities terminated the pursuit at that point but later located the vehicle as the occupants attempted to flee on foot. At last update, both the driver and passenger were taken into custody.

Double Shooting Investigated in Stockton

STOCKTON - Two injured victims were rushed to a hospital after a shooting Sunday afternoon.

The shooting was reported at about 4:20pm near Dallas and Connecticut Avenues.
Both victims were transported to a hospital where one was listed in critical condition. The other was said to have injuries that were not life threatening.

Brush Fire Possibly Started by Cigarette

MODESTO - Fire crews responded to a brush fire Sunday morning, possibly started by a cigarette.

The fire was reported at about 10:21am near the 4500 block of Roselle Avenue. The fire was initially reported to be a quarter acre in size in close proximity to a home.
Fire crews brought the blaze under control in about 30 minutes. Roselle Avenue was closed at Plainview and Claribel Roads to traffic.
One witness reported to CHP that someone threw out a cigarette that started the fire. The fire reached one acre in size.

Old Cell Phone Collection to Benefit Active Troops

LOS BANOS - A collection drive for old cell phones has been organized to help benefit active duty military personnel.

The collection is happening at Los Banos Fire Station 1, located at 333 7th Street during the month of September. The goal is to collect 100 devices by the end of the month. Each device valued at $5, or a $5 contribution will convert to a free 2.5 hour calling card for a service member.

The drive will collect old cell phones, tablets and smart phones working or not. Century 21 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 166 is also participating in the collection.

Since 2004, the event has provided more than 220 million free minutes of talk time for troops, and has recycled 11.7 million devices. Over 2800 families of veterans have also received emergency funding since July of 2012.

Six Arrested in Sex Registrant Sweep

MODESTO - Authorities arrested six people during a sex reigstrant sweep targeting offenders who were out of compliance.

The three day operation included the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office, Modesto Police, Probation Officers and US Marshals. In total, 33 compliance checks were completed leading to the six arrests.

Authorities say detectives will follow up and likely lead to about 30 arrest warrants for violators, and US Marshals will follow up on five offenders who have left the state.

Hatch Road Closed for Structure Fire

MODESTO - West Hatch Road was closed Monday morning as fire crews battled flames at a house fire.

Firefighters responded shortly after 9:30am to the 1500 block of Hatch Road between Ustick Avenue and Rancho Encantado Drive. Dark smoke was visible from the home as fire crews arrived.

Within moments, the home experienced structural failure causing a significant portion of the roof to cave in.

Multiple fire crews from Modesto and Ceres responded to the scene. Sheriff Deputies assisted with traffic control.

Cause and damage estimate was not available at time of publication.
