Search Called Off For Missing Ceres Man

TUOLUMNE COUNTY - Authorities called off the search for a missing Ceres man presumed drowned in the New Melones Reservoir.

Officials believe 58 year old Richard Matlock went Missing last weekend and drowned at the lake. Multiple agencies searched the water over various days in an attempt to find and recover Matlock. Sonar equipment and dive teams were used, but there was no success in locating the victim.

Authorities say the extreme depths of the reservoir make rescue and recovery efforts highly strategic and very dangerous. The search and recovery efforts were called off August 21st.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to the Matlock Family for their tragic loss,” authorities said in a statement.

“Our number one goal is to find Rick to be able to lay him to rest,” family wrote on social media.

They described Matlock as a big family man who was married to the love of his life for 40 years. He worked for E-Towing for almost 20 years and ran their Modesto yard. To his children and grandchildren, he was the center of their world. Relatives call the loss unimaginable and devastating.

“He was the guy that you called when you needed help, and he showed up, every single time, no matter what. Rick had so many friends and that he considered family, and a lot of people called him Dad.”
