Man in “Altered State” Dies After Apprehension by Authorities

MODESTO - Authorities investigated the death of a man after he was taken into custody by deputies Tuesday afternoon.

Officials say deputies with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on the 1000 block of Imperial Avenue for a report of a disturbance between a father and an adult son. Reports indicated the son was going crazy and breaking objects, according to a press release by the sheriff’s office.

Additional reports to authorities indicated that the disturbance had moved out of the home, and several gang members became involved with one of them possibly armed with a gun.

Arriving deputies contacted the adult son in an empty lot nearby, where he resisted officials. The man appeared to be in an altered state, according to authorities. A taser and K-9 was used to apprehend him. During the struggle, authorities asked for an ambulance to stand by in the area.

After the deputies were able to control the man, he became unresponsive and suffered a medical emergency. Deputies began performing life-saving measures on him. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment but later died Wednesday morning.

Authorities closed off a section of Frazier Street between Inyo and Lassen Avenues well into the night as they examined the area and investigated the incident. Several evidence markers could be seen on the ground near a discarded mattress and other debris on the side of a road.

The man’s age or identity was not released as of Wednesday night, however officials anticipated having more information to release Thursday. Release of body camera video was tentatively planned for release pending investigative interviews and processing of evidence.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Detective Fisher at (209) 525-7083.
