MODESTO - A fire in the cargo area of an Alaska Airlines flight prompted an emergency landing at the Modesto airport.
Multiple fire crews including Modesto, Ceres and Stanislaus Consolidated were dispatched to the Modesto Airport at about 6:38am for a report of an inbound flight with fire in the cargo area.
The Alaska Airlines flight had 62 passengers on board and was traveling from Sacramento to San Diego.
Five engines, two trucks and two airport crash rigs responded. The flight landed safely at 6:50am with no visible smoke or flames from the exterior. Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to check the interior of the airplane and found positive heat signals.
Officials say the planes fire extinguishment system had activated. The cargo was checked on the runway and no visible fire was found.
The plane was then moved to the terminal where the passengers safely exited and remained until travel arrangements were made.
