Modesto Residents Missing During Hiking Trip

TUOLUMNE COUNTY - Search and rescue crews combed through trails Thursday and Friday in search of two missing hikers and their dog who are from the Modesto area.

Authorities say 55 year old Donna Hallberg and 59 year old Mark Smallwood did not return as planned from their hiking trip. They were accompanied by a black and white dog.

According to the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office, the two left on Sunday the 12th to hike the trails in the Pinecrest area. Their gray Chevy Tahoe was parked at the Crabtree Trailhead, and the two have not returned to their vehicle.

The Sheriff's Office says both are experienced hikers and have hiked this trail several times before. Both were said to have three days worth of supplies for the hike. A friend called to report them missing when they did not return as planned on Tuesday.

Search teams have worked from both ground and air and have included helicopters from the California Highway Patrol and the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities ask anyone who may have seen them or know their whereabouts to call (209) 533-5815 immediately.
