Fire Crews Battle Flames in Lodi

LODI - Fire crews battled a fire at a warehouse late Thursday night.

At about 11:50pm, firefighters with the Lodi Fire Department responded to a report of a fire near the 600 block of East Lockeford Street.

Arriving fire crews encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions from the rear of a commercial building.

The fire quickly spread to debris and vegetation, as well as engulfing a tree. A column of smoke was visible from a distance, and blanketed across highway 99.

Employees at a service station behind the business cleared customers and their vehicles from their parking lot, in case the fire were to spread.

Firefighters used tools to cut through fence and aluminum paneling to attack the flames.

By 12:30am, fire crews had gained the upper hand on the fire. The damage appeared to be mostly contained to the rear of the building.

A cause and damage estimate was not available at time of publication. No injuries were reported.

Suspicious Death Investigated in Merced County

PLANADA - Authorities investigated the death of a man Thursday morning that was considered suspicious.

The man was found in the area of Ivett Road and Childs Avenue in the township of Planada. Officials did not release a cause of death or any further details, only noting that the man died as a result of suspicious circumstances.

No other identification or details regarding the case were released. Detectives from the Merced County Sheriff’s Office responded to take over the investigation.

Man Who Shot Sheriff Sergeant Captured

PASO ROBLES - Authorities have captured a man who shot a Merced County Sheriff Deputy in the chest Wednesday afternoon after a pursuit.

Guadalupe Lopez-Herrera was captured by multiple agencies in the Paso Robles area after authorities used a used a spike strip to disable the truck he was driving.

As the vehicle stopped, the suspect opened fire on authorities with a handgun, officials say. A K-9 was deployed and he was taken into custody.

Lopez-Herrera was wanted after opening fire on deputies in the Dos Palos area in Merced County Wednesday afternoon, striking a Merced Sheriff Sergeant in the leg. The sergeant was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.

Lopez-Herrera is expected to be booked into the Merced County Jail.

Police Arrest Homicide Suspect

MODESTO - Police arrested a homicide suspect Thursday morning, officials say.

The suspect and a weapon were located Thursday morning at a mobile home park on Yosemite Boulevard.

Officials at the scene confirmed the suspect was wanted in connection to the shooting death of James Seth Brackett on August 30th.

Police also located a shotgun at the location.

The shooting happened Friday morning on the 200 block of Rosina Avenue. Officers responded to a report of a person suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a hospital where he later died.

Merced Deputy Shot, Suspect on the Run

DOS PALOS - A Merced County Deputy was wounded during a shooting, and the suspect is on the run.

Authorities with the Merced County Sheriff’s Office say a Deputy was shot during a confrontation with a suspect, but is expected to survive.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are working to locate the suspect. He was identified as 51 year old Guadalupe Lopez-Herrera.

Lopez Herrera was last seen possibly driving a white 2013 GMC Sierra crew cab with the plate of 25599H1. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to call (209) 385-7445 where callers can remain anonymous.

Police Seek Theft Suspect

MODESTO - Police are looking for a woman who was captured on surveillance video stealing merchandise from a store. 

Authorities say the theft happened on July 26th shortly before 10 PM at a business on McHenry Avenue.  The surveillance video shows the woman looking through shoes inside the store.

The woman then exit the store with approximately $125 in merchandise, pushing a loss prevention officer as she leaves, according to police.

Police say she is a Caucasian woman in her 20’s, wearing a maroon top, black shorts, and blue or black Adidas shoes carrying a multi colored backpack.

STOCKTON - A woman who was found deceased on a sidewalk last week in Stockton was the mother of a recent homicide victim, loved ones said.

Sonya Coilton was found on a sidewalk last Tuesday night after authorities responded for a report of a disturbance. She was pronounced deceased at the scene, near the intersection of West Flora and Madison Streets.

Loved ones at the scene said her son, LC Coilton was murdered a couple of months prior to her death. A CVTV article dated June 5th reports his death near the intersection of San Joaquin and Sonora Street. He was killed in a shooting.

Sonya’s relatives at the scene indicated concern for her other son, who they said had health issues. “We’re all he has now,” the family members said.

SANTA BARBARA - A fire that caused a dive boat to sink overnight off the coast of California has left as many as 33 people missing, officials say.

Authorities say a distress call was received on an emergency channel at about 3:30am near Santa Cruz Island. The report indicated a 75-foot commercial diving boat was fully engulfed in fire.

Crews with the US Coast Guard, Santa Barbara Fire Department responded.

Early reports indicate that five crew members were rescued by a pleasure boat in the area. Authorities searched the shoreline by boat and helicopter Monday morning for survivors. Reports indicated many passengers were trapped below deck of the vessel.

The boat, named Conception, sank about 20 yards from the island. A phone number for concerned family members was established Monday afternoon. Families can call the hotline at 833-688-5551.

MODESTO - Authorities are seeking a suspect wanted for beating a transient man so badly that he died from his injuries.

The violent attack happened on August 10th at Garrison Park. Police say the victim, identified as 63 year old Jace Decker, was in the park when he was confronted by two men. Police say the two men attacked Decker who pleaded with them to stop.

The two men continued to beat Mr. Decker until he was unconscious. Authorities say he transported to a hospital where he fell into a coma and later died.

On August 17th, authorities arrested Matthew Arguello in connection to the assault. Police have also identified 25 year old Ruben Rosales as a suspect and are currently seeking him.

Police say the suspects beat Mr. Decker without warning believing he was a sex offender registrant, however he was not. Authorities say both suspects are known criminal street gang members, and the attack is believed to have gang influence.

Authorities say although no weapons were used in the assault, Rosales should be considered dangerous. Police note the crime was unprovoked by gang members in close proximity to an elementary school.

Detectives who are working the case are seeking the public’s help in locating the outstanding suspect. They believe he is being aided as a fugitive and is on the run to avoid being arrested. Authorities say they will seek prosecution for anyone aiding Rosales.

Motorcyclist Injured in Traffic Collision

MODESTO - A motorcyclist suffered major injuries during a collision with a pickup truck Sunday morning.

The crash happened after 9:00am near the intersection of Carpenter Road and Woodland Avenue. The pickup truck turned into the path of the northbound motorcycle, getting stuck to the rear bumper.

Police officers closed off the northbound lanes of Carpenter Road at Woodland Avenue while investigators examined the scene. Early reports indicate the rider suffered major injuries.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the collision.
