MODESTO - Dave Lopez, former Modesto City Councilman, died from injuries sustained in a traffic collision Monday afternoon.

The news of his passing was confirmed on Mr. Lopez's Facebook page Tuesday morning.

"It is with great Sadness that we announce the death of Dave Lopez," the post said. "He passed away after a car accident yesterday afternoon. He was loved by everyone he encountered."

Lopez previously served on the Modesto City Council and later opened Sam and Dave's Market downtown.

"If you met him, he became your friend," another person expressed on social media. 

Monday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol responded to a crash reported on eastbound State Route 120 just west of Highway 99. The crash involved a Chevy pickup a Dodge utility and a big rig.

One lane of the Highway was closed for about two hours as authorities investigated the crash.

Information regarding a memorial service was set to follow. Lopez served on the city council from November 2007 to November 2015.

Fatal Crash Reported Near Atwater

MERCED COUNTY - Authorities with the California Highway Patrol investigated a crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian Monday night.

At about 9:30pm emergency personnel responded to the area of Santa Fe Drive and Wallace Road for a report of a collision involving a pedestrian. The involved vehicle stopped down the road from the crash scene.

The pedestrian died from their injuries suffered in the crash. Both lanes of Santa Fe were closed until about 11:00pm.

No further information regarding the crash was available Monday night.

Stabbing Investigated in Modesto

MODESTO - Police investigated a stabbing early Tuesday morning.

The stabbing was reported at about 12:45am Tuesday on Marseilles Lane. Early reports indicated there was a disturbance at a home with one person injured.

Arriving officers detained one person, said to be a woman, and requested an ambulance to the scene.

Elderly Woman Killed by Hit and Run Driver

STOCKTON - Authorities with the California Highway Patrol are investigating a collision that claimed the life of a 71 year old woman Thursday evening.

The crash happened shortly before 7:00pm near the intersection of Leesburg Place and West Benjamin Holt Drive. Early reports indicate that a woman was found on the ground unconscious after she was struck by an unknown model pickup truck. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities closed the roadway to investigate the crash. Thursday night, officials had no indications if drugs or alcohol played a factor.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the pickup truck was silver in color, last seen traveling eastbound from the crash scene.

Suspect Drowns After Fleeing From Authorities

SAN JOQUIN COUNTY - A man under investigation during a burglary case drowned after fleeing from authorities into water, officials said Wednesday.

Lathrop detectives located the potential suspect at a location he was known to frequent, but when detectives attempted to make contact with him he fled.

Officials say the suspect ran into water near the area of Woodward Avenue and South Williams Road. When authorities advised the suspect to come out of the water, he refused.

Rescue/Dive teams with Lathrop Manteca Fire responded to attempt to help locate the suspect. He was later found deceased by the Sheriff's Boating Unit.

A protocol investigation into the incident was launched by authorities, details regarding the identity of the suspect were not released.

Bicyclist Killed by Train

EMPIRE - A bicyclist was killed after being struck by a train Tuesday morning.

The collision happened shortly after 8:00am near the intersection of Church and Second Streets.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene, however the bicyclist was pronounced deceased.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. No further information was available at publication time.

Traffic near Yosemite and Santa Fe was congested due to the crash.

MODESTO - Authorities with the California Highway Patrol investigated a crash involving a disposal truck that claimed the life of the operator Monday afternoon.

Shortly after 2:00pm, emergency crews were dispatched to the 3600 block of Finch Road for a report of report of a truck that had crashed into a tree. Arriving personnel found a disposal vehicle that had collided into a fence and a tree.

Finch Road was closed for several hours as crews worked the scene. The crash claimed the life of the operator, who authorities identified Monday only as a 52 year old man.

The road conditions were wet with rainy weather Monday afternoon. Investigators worked to determine the factors leading up to the crash.

No further details were provided. California Highway Patrol Officials encourage motorists to slow down during rainy weather.

MODESTO - Fire crews from various agencies responded to a report of a house on fire Sunday night.

The fire was dispatched at about 10:45pm at a house at the intersection of Miller and Phoenix, just north of Yosemite Boulevard.

Arriving firefighters found a home with significant fire activity that was visible from the street. The home appeared vacant and boarded up, with security fencing around it. Neighbors in the area noted that the home had previously burned, and saw squatters at the property recently.

The fire was controlled in less than an hour. An investigator responded to the scene to investigate the cause and origin. No further information was available Sunday night.

Homicide Investigated in Weston Ranch

WESTON RANCH - Police investigated a homicide after a person was shot dead Saturday night.

Officers with the Stockton Police Department responded to the 3300 block of John Townsend Place at about 8:30pm for a report of a shooting. Arriving officers located a male believed to be in his 20's suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Medical personnel responded to the scene to provide care for the victim, however he was pronounced deceased. The victim appeared to have been shot in the middle of the road just off Carolyn Weston Boulevard. Investigators examined the scene and gathered evidence as rain began to fall.

Homicide detectives responded to take over the investigation. As of late Saturday night, authorities had no motive or suspect information.

One neighbor who was arriving home during the investigation described a shooting in the area the previous year, and was concerned about this recent incident.

Two Shot at Thanksgiving Gathering

MODESTO - Police investigated a shooting that left two people wounded Friday afternoon.

The shooting happened at about 2:00pm near Haddon Avenue and Riverside Drive. Witnesses described hearing gunfire, then rushing over to find two people suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police say the victims were among family members gathering at a home for Thanksgiving. One victim was found sitting in a chair, the other was down on the ground near the doorway. Authorities received several 911 calls about the shooting.

According to authorities, a vehicle pulled up to the intersection and an occupant fired several rounds into the gathering. The victims were said to be related to each other. They were rushed to a hospital by ambulance for care. Police say both victims were expected to survive.

Neighbors were puzzled by the shooting, not knowing why someone would open fire on the family, especially during a gathering to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Rita Guerrero, a nearby neighbor who rushed to help and found the wounded victims, said one of the victims was a young man who had recently graduated high school. Police also say they have no reason to believe the family was targeted.
