Celebrating 75 Years of Batman

MODESTO - Lined up both in and out of costume, fans of the caped crusader descended upon comic book shops across the valley to celebrate 75 years of Batman on Wednesday.

"It's something very special," said Lillian Allen, owner of Bonanza Books and Comics on McHenry Avenue, "He's one of our most famous heroes and we're celebrating him today."

A large crowd was lined up at the shop before it opened in the morning. "We had a lot of characters here in the morning, it was a lot of fun."

The shop gave away a Batman mask and comic book with a purchase for fans. Jessica Vasquez of Tracy drove all the way to Modesto for the event.

"A chance to dress up like Harley Quinn sounds like fun to me," she said.

Batman made his first appearance in Detective Comics number 27 in May of 1939. Since then the franchise has grown to include several motion pictures, television series, toys, and crossover comics.

Batman is due for a future appearance along side DC co-star Superman in "Dawn of Justice." The 2016 film is directed by Zack Snyder.
