MODESTO - Phyllis Talton feels victorious for the first time in three years.

The man accused of shooting her son Sir Jay Louis Taylor to death was sentenced to 83 years to life in Stanislaus County Court.

"My son was shot six times on May 30th 2013," Talton said. "We sat with my son for approximately 12 hours until his heart stopped beating."

Taylor was shot on the 100 block of Maple Street in west Modesto by Justin Anthony Banks. Talton says after initially shooting her son, Banks returned, picked up a cigarette and said the word "executed" before shooting her son again.

Bystanders watched as Taylor lay dying on the ground. The first people to attempt to save her son's life were the first arriving Modesto Police officers who performed CPR on him.

"We thank and praise God," Talton said. "They started the CPR and brought my son back. We saw my son on video laying in the driveway, gone. We're so thankful that they were able to bring him back for those 12 hours that he was here."

Through those 12 hours, Talton says she and her family were able to spend their last moments with her son and comfort him as best as they could.

Talton also encourages other mothers suffering similar situations to stay strong.

"One day justice will prevail," she said. "And if it doesn't prevail in the court system, God knows how to take care of things.

Auntie Phyllis this really choked me up. I can't imagine how tremendously horrific this was for you and all of your babies. I'm too so thankful that justice prevailed for SirJay and for all of you!
