The skies of Patterson and Tracy could be buzzing in the near future by the sound of drones.
No need for alarm though, the drones are a new development announced this weekend by shopping giant Amazon. The service, called "Prime Air," promises 30 minute package deliveries weighing less than 5 pounds to residents living within 10 miles of a fulfillment center.
The program is not ready for take-off (pun intended) as the program does not match FAA regulations. Changes in the FAA regulations are anticipated as soon as 2015.
Other companies flying with the idea (haha) of drone delivery include Dominos Pizza and Burrito bomber.
A group of several tombstones loomed over 10th street place over the past few days in Modesto.
The tombstones bore the names of several downtown businesses that have gone under over the past few years in the downtown area.
The display was a silent protest said Kimberly Humke, in the hopes of creating awareness of what she called a "fragile downtown ecosystem."
"It's a shocking number of businesses." Humke said. "I want this to generate a community dialogue to help and fix and turn around the direction our downtown is getting into."
Humke noted high rents, empty storefronts, and lack of activity as contributors to a downturn in business.
"Every time a business closes, it makes it less desirable and less encouraging for other businesses to come to downtown."
Humke says a vibrant downtown and good public safety strategies is a good step toward attracting and growing businesses.

SACRAMENTO – Gov. Jerry Brown is using his revised budget plan to call for changes to the way public schools are funded. He released the plan Tuesday morning.
Brown wants to use much of the surge in 2013 tax revenue to funnel $2.9 billion to K-12 public schools and community colleges, as called for by Proposition 98.
Brown also wants to send more money to districts with lower-income children or students who are learning English.

LODI – Visit Lodi! has rebranded and unveiled its new logo today at its annual tourism luncheon.
The new brand is “Lodi, behind the wine,” which is meant to send the message that a visit to Lodi doesn’t end with a visit to the area’s wineries but includes other family and recreational activities.
The organization’s new logo features a wine glass with “Lodi” behind it.
IRVINE – Home prices in the United States in March saw their biggest year over year increase since March 2006, according to residential property information and analytics provider, CoreLogic. Prices nationwide, including distressed sales, increased 10.5 percent in March of this year compared to March 2012.
"For the first time since March 2006, both the overall index and the index that excludes distressed sales are above 10 percent year over year," said Mark Fleming, chief economist for CoreLogic. "The pace of appreciation has been accelerating throughout 2012 and so far in 2013 leading into the home buying season."
The increase was much greater in the Central Valley. In Modesto, home prices, including distressed sales, increased by 17.3 percent in March 2013 compared to March 2012. On a month over month basis, home prices, including distressed sales, increased by 3.1 percent in March 2013 compared to February 2013. In Stockton, home prices, including distressed sales, increased by 15.1 percent in March 2013 compared to March 2012. On a month-over-month basis, home prices increased by 3.2 percent in March 2013 compared to February 2013.
