Ceres Police Arrest Auto Theft Suspect After Dangerous High Speed Chase

Ceres – On August 1, 2012 at 08:01 AM, a Modesto man spotted his truck that was stolen from the airport district area being driven in Ceres. The Modesto resident followed his stolen truck, driven by Carlton Schuster 22 years old out of Modesto, and followed him to the residential area of Mauna Loa Drive in Ceres. The victim attempted to detain Carlton Schuster, and during the brief struggle, Schuster accelerated the vehicle, dragging the victim a few feet. The victim’s foot was run over by the truck.

The victim called police and Ceres officers located Carlton Schuster in the area of Herndon Road and Grand View. Schuster refused to stop when officers initiated a traffic stop and a pursuit ensued. Carlton Schuster led Ceres officers through the northeastern portion of Ceres. The pursuit continued onto Bystrum and River Road, where officers used a Pursuit Intervention Maneuver (otherwise known as a P.I.T. Maneuver), which spun the truck. When it came to a stop, officers ordered Carlton Schuster to surrender, but instead, Schuster put the truck into reverse. The truck moved dangerously toward an officer, who had seconds to move out of the way or he would have been struck. Carlton Schuster then moved forward towards another police officer was able to move out of the truck’s path.

The pursuit continued through the 9th Street area of Modesto, where Carlton Schuster made dangerous maneuvers with no regard for other drivers and continued Northbound on Highway 99 at speeds between 80 to 100 MPH. The pursuit ended in a residential area in the 5100 block of Bacchus Court in the city of Salida.

In order to end the pursuit and prevent anyone from being injured when Schuster drove into the cul de sac, a Ceres officer pinned the truck between his patrol car and a retainer wall and took Carlton Schuster into custody. After Carlton Schuster was handcuffed, he asked the officer, “Am I going to jail?”

In answer to his question, Carlton Schuster was booked at the Stanislaus County Jail on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer, one count of assault with a deadly weapon against the victim, felony evasion from police, vehicle theft, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.

The owner of the stolen vehicle refused medical attention at the scene but will consider seeking medical attention on his own.
